Anti-Bullying: Understanding Bullying Among Children

One of the many problems that children in school experience is bullying. Bullying is the aggressive and unwanted behavior that many school-aged children show. This is usually the result of a power imbalance among peers which can be either real, or just perceived. This negative behavior can be repeated and can result in a long term repetition so long as the bully has someone to bully. Whether you are the one bullying, or you are the one being bullied, there can be serious problems which is why it is in the best concerns of schools to have anti bullying programs to create an ideal and safe environment for everyone.

In order something to be labeled as bullying, the child must show aggressiveness in their behavior and include these two factors.

1.) Power imbalance – An imbalance in power can be determined by physical strength, the access to information that can embarrass someone else, or even being popular. Those who have these traits and qualities can use them to have control over their peers or even bring hard to them. However, it is important to note that a power imbalance can change as time goes on depending on the situation even if the same people are involved. There might even be cases where the bully becomes the bullied.

2.) Repetition – A simple prank or joke that can embarrass someone, some form of aggression and violence, etc. isn’t always considered bullying. It may have just been a one-time thing that resulted in the present situation. However, once things like this are repeated wherein the person deliberately repeats his negative behavior towards someone to try to harm him emotionally or physically, then that is considered bullying.

Anti bullying programs for schools are very essential in making sure that the students do not feel danger or harm towards themselves. Examples of actions that are considered bullying are threatening someone, spreading rumors about the person, harming the person either physically, verbally, or both, and even trying to isolate someone from the group. With anti bullying programs in schools hopefully these can be put to a stop.

Bullying can be classified into three types: verbal, social, and physical. Bullying someone verbally involved saying harsh things towards a person. Examples would be calling him names, teasing him, making inappropriate comments, taunting the person, or even making threats about harming them.

Social bullying or relational bullying involves trying to damage the reputation of someone or his relationship with others. Examples of social or relational bullying are isolating a person deliberately, convincing other people not to befriend someone, spreading rumors about the person, and making an embarrassment of him in public.

Finally, the last type of bullying is physical bullying which involved hurting a person physically or damaging his possessions. Examples of physical bullying are hitting, punching, spitting at someone, deliberately pushing and tripping him, taking away someone’s things and breaking them, and showing inappropriate gestures.

Bullying still exists today and it puts a lot of kids in risky and problematic situations. The best we can do is to hold anti bullying programs and promote peace amongst one another.
