One of the dental treatments that are aimed at replacing a person’s missing teeth is Dental Implants. The implant is a metal post made from titanium and other strong metals. Once attached, the metal structure will act as the base and support the new artificial tooth that will go on top. During the surgical process, the metal post will be attached to the area of the missing tooth down onto the bone itself through a pre-drilled hole. A person can lose his teeth through physical damage, deterioration, aging, etc. and can be replaced through implants.
There are two different kinds of dental implants that are being recognized and considered a safe dental treatment by the American Dental Association. These two different kinds of dental implants are Endosteal implants and Subperiosteal implants.
1.) Endosteal implants – Between both kinds of dental implants, Endosteal implants are the more common treatment. The term Endosteal refers to how the metal implant is attached and fused into the patient’s jawbone. The procedure requires screws and cylinders to hold down the metal post during the healing process while the metal and bone fuses.
2.) Subperiosteal implants – Unlike Endosteal implants, Subperiosteal implants are attached onto the gums instead of the bone. Instead of the metal post attached directly, a metal frame is first attached and once the gums have healed over the frame, then will the metal be added.
Getting dental implants really is a great way to replace any missing teeth as it is considered one of the best and safest dental treatments there are. However, not everyone who is missing a tooth can get a Dental Implant. In order for someone to be fit to get a dental implant he or she must have a healthy jawbone and healthy gums as well. Someone who wishes to get dental implants should first go to a dentist and be assessed to determine whether his bone and gums can support a dental implant.
During the procedure of getting a dental implant, it is an oral surgeon or a periodontist that will work on getting the implant fitted onto the patient’s mouth. With their knowledge and skills, they can make sure that your implants are fitted on properly. Most often the surgeon or periodontist will work in a team during the surgical process. After the surgery is complete, the post will be left to heal for a certain period with a metal cap on top while an artificial tooth is being fabricated.
Once the area has healed and the bone has fused onto the metal post, the patient can now get the artificial tooth attached on top of the Dental Implant. The dental professionals make sure that the artificial tooth properly matches the real teeth of the patient.
With the dental implant already in place, the patient must care for it just like how he cares for his other teeth by cleaning it properly and practicing good oral hygiene. With proper maintenance, the dental implant is sure to last a long time.
