The Cases which can be Treated through Lasik Surgery

February 7th, 2017 / / categories: 31 /

Lasik eye surgery has proven to be a revolutionary treatment in the eye industry. Ever since it was developed way back in 1991 it has helped many people gain clearer vision without the need to wear corrective devices like contacts or glasses. Lasik Surgery is the surgical treatment used by eye surgeons to alter the shape of a person’s irregularly shaped cornea to make it normal and grant the person with clearer vision. To reshape the cornea, the eye surgeon directs a laser onto the corneal tissue in a process known as ablation.

People who have irregularly shaped corneas have blurry vision. This is because the cornea is responsible for focusing the light coming in through the lens and onto the retina. If ever the focus of the light is not directly on the person’s cornea this results in blurry vision, more specifically known as a refractive error as there is a mismatch in the focus and the shape or length of the cornea. Today we are going to take a look into three cases which can be treated with the use of lasik eye surgery all of which are refractive errors and a result of an irregularly shaped cornea.

1.) Farsightedness – Also known as hyperopia in clinical terms, farsightedness is the result when the cornea of a person is a bit too long. Because of this the light’s focus actually goes beyond the retina being located behind it. This is the reason why people with farsightedness have to wear glasses that make one’s vision appear smaller or further so that the focus of the light may be moved forward and directly hit the retina.

Eye surgeons use the excimer laser in Lasik Surgery to burn off some corneal tissue on the ends reducing its length and making its shape normal.

2.) Nearsightedness – Also known as myopia in clinical terms, nearsightedness is the opposite of farsightedness and is the result when the corneas of a person are a bit too short. This results in the focus of the light actually being just in front of the retina instead of on it. The corrective lenses of people who are nearsighted make an image larger to make it appear closer so that the focus can be adjusted backwards.

Lasik eye surgery is used to burn off tissue at the top and bottom so that the shape of the cornea will be normalized.

3.) Astigmatism – Astigmatism is a more complex problem when it comes to the shape of the cornea. The distortion may also affect the person’s lens. People who suffer from astigmatism see a blurry vision of multiple images when viewing a single object. There are people who suffer from a combination of astigmatism and either myopia or hyperopia. The cornea’s distorted shape is corrected through lasik eye surgery.

So these are the three cases which are all examples of refractive errors. If you suffer from one of these you can choose to wear corrective lenses or you can seek treatment from Houston Eye Center that offers lasik eye surgery.
